CHAPTER 13

The next morning at 7 AM, I was pleasantly surprised to see every member of the Closed Case Club show up at the café. Their eyes lit up when they spotted Drew, and they chatted eagerly with him. It was heartwarming to see how quickly they'd accepted him into our little group after he'd helped us find Emory, Carla's boyfriend, during one of our previous cases.

Once everyone had settled in with their drinks and pastries, I set up the whiteboard I'd been working on with Drew the night before. “All right, gang. Drew and I went through our suspects last night, and we've got some ideas on what we need to focus on.”

I started with Angela Sutcliff, Larry's ex-wife. “We know Angela had a rocky relationship with Larry, especially towards the end. We need to look deeper into the details of their divorce and—”

“Oh!” Eliza interrupted, her eyes wide with excitement. “I've got something on that!” All eyes turned to her as she fumbled with her tablet. “I did some digging last night, and you won't believe what I found.”

Intrigued, I raised an eyebrow. “What is it?”

She looked up with a triumphant grin on her face. “Larry never canceled his life insurance policy after the divorce. And get this—it was for 2 million dollars, Angela is still the beneficiary.”

The room erupted into a cacophony of gasps and exclamations. My jaw dropped. “Two million dollars?” I repeated, stunned.

Jasper let out a low whistle. “That's one heck of a motive.”

“It certainly puts Angela at the top of our suspect list,” Carla mused, her librarian's mind no doubt cataloging this new information.

“This is exactly the kind of information we need,” Drew said. “Good work, Eliza.”

Benny scooted closer to her and read what she’d written. “We need to find out if Angela knew about this policy. If she did...”

“It would give her a very strong motive,” I completed his thought. “Eliza, can you dig deeper into this?”

Eliza agreed enthusiastically. “I'm on it.”

“Great.” I turned back to the whiteboard. “Now, let's go through the rest of our suspects and what we need to find out about each of them.”

I walked them through our thoughts on Eddie Garcia, Claire Jensen, Tommy Perkins, Martha Wilkins, Frank Monroe, and Vicky Lawson. Each of them provided me with their unique perspective.

“Jasper, were you able to verify Eddie’s alibi?”

“Yes. I spoke with two construction workers. Both of them said they bought food from Eddie’s food truck the day of the murder. That being said, I can’t say for certain that he was at the site during the exact time of Larry’s murder. He could have closed for an hour, driven to the Community Center to kill Larry, and rushed back to the food truck.”

“Should we take his name off the list?” I asked.

“I wouldn’t, but I’d put his name at the bottom of the suspects.”

“Thanks. Moving onto Claire, we need to understand more about Larry’s illegal activities and whether she was involved in any of them—even tangentially.”

“I already spoke
